Its antecedents exist in the historical understanding of political Islam, Salafism, or Wahhabism, with which it is often used interchangeably. This entry focuses on the historical evolution of the concept, the range of contemporary understandings it relates, and the implications of its usage for understanding the Muslim experience in both minority and majority settings
