Surrogacy” is the commonly used term for the practice of assisted reproduction, in which a woman gestates and gives birth to a child for someone else to raise. If she receives monetary payment beyond the reimbursement of medical and other reasonable expenses, the arrangement is labeled commercial surrogacy or contract pregnancy; otherwise it is referred to as altruistic surrogacy. Surrogacy has been generating feminist, ethical, legal, and social debates for over three decades. This scholarship can be loosely classified into four categories: liberal and feminist defense of the practice, which emphasizes a woman's right to use her body as she chooses; works that debate the ethics or morality of this practice; the multiple systems of stratification that are potentially reinforced by such arrangements; and, more recently, ethnographic scholarship on the impact of surrogacy on the cultural meanings of motherhood and kinship
