Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have significantly increased the concentration of atmospheric “greenhouse gases,” which has led to a warming of the earth's climate. This global warming and related climate changes are creating a less stable and habitable environment for life, such as by radically altering precipitation patterns, causing more destructive weather events, and melting polar ice and consequently generating sea level rises. While sociological research on global warming has traditionally been limited, recent sociological scholarship has generated knowledge on the social and structural features of global warming. Sociological work has demonstrated how global warming and climate change is an outcome of dominant political and economic systems and how it is impacting communities and creating inequalities. This analysis is essential to challenging the political systems, public apathy, and climate change denialism that are entrenching global warming trends and pushing the world toward catastrophic natural tipping points
