Social media analysis, a subfield in sociology, is a method of analyzing the role of technologically supported social networks and virtual communities in the contemporary social world. Since the turn of the twenty‐first century an explosion of Internet and digital technologies has transformed communication and information management. Today social media analysis works to account for a wide variety of ways in which such technologies are employed in the social world. Methodologically social media analysis uses both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, from models focusing on big data in computational sociology to small‐scale ethnographic research. Social media analysis currently works to identify how technology shapes, reinforces, and even constrains human behavior, social relationships, and individual and collective identities
