Kunio Odaka was a pioneer in the field of sociology, and struggled to successfully establish this field of study as a discipline in Japan. Through his work on occupational and industrial sociology he laid the groundwork for present‐day sociological research into social stratification, occupational careers, and international comparison studies in Japan. He conducted studies on work ethics and morale relying on Marx, Weber, Maslow, Mills, and Alain, as well as on cross‐country studies and the status attainment process analysis. Through a series of large‐scale surveys, he examined social stratification and mobility, worker's consciousness about companies and unions, and Japanese‐style business management. On the basis of these studies, he insisted upon the “democratization of management” and proposed organizational reforms that would organize work around regular, autonomous, and small groups
