Although electronic commerce was facilitated by electronic data interchange (EDI) standards from the late 1970s onwards, the phrase entered the business lexicon in the 1990s when the world was introduced to the first Internet browser. Antecedents of electronic commerce include the French system Minitel, which allowed transactions over the closed network of France Telecom in the 1980s, and SABRE, the American Airlines computer reservation system as early as 1962
