Informed by insights from the stress process model and critical race theory, this entry offers a concise synthesis of sociological inquiry into associations between race/ethnicity and mental health. As a racialized social system and fundamental determinant of health, racism shapes ethnoracial variation in mental health via inequitable stress exposure, access to resources, and institutional responses. Research generally identifies more similarities than differences in mental health across races/ethnicities, though patterns often depend on the measure used. When differences arise, Asian, Latinx, and Black Americans typically have a lower prevalence of mental illness than white Americans and Native Americans, though extensive variation exists within all of these groups. Future inquiry can benefit from critically examining the social determinants of mental health that extend from systemic racism (e.g., racialized stressors). The diversifying ethnoracial composition and heterogeneity within groups provide an opportunity for scholarship to enhance understanding and theorizing of associations between race/ethnicity and mental health
