This entry engages Judith Butler's contribution to troubling gender for what it portends for feminist sociological inquiry. Drawing on her exploration of the social construction of sex and gender, it suggests that despite feminist sociological contributions to understanding gender relations and acknowledging the specificity of women's experience, the field has paid scant attention to Butler's epistemic critique of binary logic. The entry suggests that sociology's embrace of poststructural and postcolonial analyses, cornerstones of Butler's creative insights, might help to inspire critical thinking in the discipline
