The aim of this new section in World Archaeology is to present different perspectives on important issues in archaeological inquiry. Our contributions describe how each of us tries to understand technological variation and technological change. Despite the fact that we teach in the same university department our views are quite different, and, even if they do not encompass the full range of archaeological approaches to the study of technology, we believe that our perspectives do cover a significant part of it. All the same we do not believe that everything is worth debating. We describe these areas of commonality below so that readers will have a better idea what we think does, and does not, merit more contentious discourse
