This essay sheds new light on a well-known medieval conduct treatise by adopting a perspective informed by social scientific conceptualizations of agency, as a complement and corrective to the paradigm of power. This creates a framework that can help us capture the ways in which the bourgeois wife, envisaged in the Ménagier as fundamentally disempowered in relation to the husband, could act in pursuit of strategic objectives. The text makes clear the aim of reducing the wife to an actant, dutifully executing her husband's instructions. Indirectly, however, it also discloses women's potential to emerge as autonomous agents. Drawing on anthropological studies of nondiscursive social practices, the essay explores the articulation of practical, moral, and aesthetic imperatives in the Ménagier, and reassesses the text's relation to the social imaginary of the Late Middle Ages, particularly through the comparison with the socioeconomic records of the livres de raison
