This essay elucidates the influence of Romantic poets—especially Blake, Wordsworth, Shelley—on E. M. Forster’s A Room with a View, arguing that a Romantic impulse plays a significant role in the novel’s structure as well as its symbolism. A number of critics have pointed out this influence on Forster’s early novels but in largely general terms. Extending their argument, this essay considers the extent to which the appeal of the novel derives from the poetry and poetics of Blake, Wordsworth and Shelley. Underscoring the significance of river imagery and the character Mr. Emerson’s role as a Romantic mentor, the paper demonstrates Forster’s agile adaptation of Romantic attitudes and re-evaluates its significance in relation to Forster’s idea of the novel in Aspects of the Novel
