Grzegorz Niziołek’s article examines the theatrical representations of Jakub Szela in Polish culture - from Wyspiański’s The Wedding to Strzępka and Demirski’s In the Name of Jakub S. - within the framework of the popular "peasant turn". The author presents Szela as a phantasmatic figure shaped by collective imagination and fixed within the national imaginary, which prevents a genuine re-evaluation of the Galician peasant uprising. Theatrical Szela becomes a symptom of repression and a mechanism preserving the boundaries of Polish identity, even within projects that claim emancipatory intentions
