The article examines the creation of a community-based public history project – the Non-Racial Sports History Project (NRSHP) – by former players and administrators of the South African Council on Sport (SACOS), the premier movement of non-racial sport in South Africa during the 1970s and 1980s. Despite its leading role in organising grassroots sports and acknowledged as the sports wing of the liberation movement, the history of SACOS has received only limited attention. Launched in 2014, the NRSHP has pioneered the co-production of community sports histories and the creation of an archive. Its use of oral history has been the principal method of uncovering hidden histories and highlighting the role of rank-and-file sportspersons and the broader communities that built non-racial sport. The production of new narratives has especially emphasized the crucial and multiple roles women played in the successes achieved by SACOS. These new narratives, together with an emerging scholarship on black sports, challenge dominant white and male-centric narratives of sports histories in South Africa
