This study offers a critical discourse analysis of how U.S. mainstream media constructed the public image of Kristi Yamaguchi, the first Asian American woman to win Olympic gold in the Winter Games. Employing Anne-Marie Fortier’s notion of the ‘politics of pride’ and David Theo Goldberg’s theory of racial governance, the paper examines the dual process of de-racialization and re-racialization that shaped Yamaguchi’s mediated identity. Her racial difference was alternately neutralized and re-inscribed in symbolic terms, positioning her both as a model minority and a multicultural icon. Focusing on media coverage during the peak of her competitive career, the analysis reveals how Yamaguchi’s public persona became a discursive site for managing racial ambivalence, national pride, and cultural belonging. This research contributes to critical sport studies and Asian American cultural criticism by interrogating the representational labor imposed on racialized athletes within neoliberal multiculturalism
