The following notes are offered in an attempt to elucidate certain differences between Ackerman (1964) and myself (1958) concerning the interpretation of the ethnographic data on the Purum.I should like to preface them by expressing my pleasure that a colleague should have applied himself to these reports, and to my analysis of them, for it is wholly desirable that anthropologists, especially if they are of different theoretical persuasions, should examine the same evidence and see what different interpretations may be possible (cf.Needham 1961 :94).As for my analysis itself, perhaps it may be taken into account (by way of explanation, not defense) that it was written in the end of 1956 and was my first apprentice attempt a t a total structural analysis.I am therefore all the more ready to declare my mistakes, and can now contemplate without great personal perturbation the respects in which it is unsatisfactory.As I have made clear elsewhere (e.g., 1962a: 74), I intend to correct and amplify the analysis with a view to including it in an eventual monograph on prescriptive alliance; I am still learning how to make such analyses, and I am grateful for this occasion to reconsider some of my ideas on Purum society
