Fernand Ouellet, 1926–2021 Colin Coates Fernand Ouellet, a leading figure in the history of this journal, died on June 28, 2021, in Toronto. Through his long, and celebrated, career he played key roles in the evolution of Histoire sociale / Social History. » Ouellet published a “note de recherche” in that first issue, and then over the next thirty years, Histoire sociale / Social History regularly contained his articles and book reviews. His studies illustrate many prominent social history themes of those decades, with his emphasis on social class, the economy, and quantitative methods. In his articles, he defended his often controversial views of the history of Lower Canada, best reflected in his first two award-winning monographs: Histoire économique et sociale du Québec, 1760–1850 (1966) and Le Bas Canada, 1791–1840: changements structuraux et crise (1976). Both of these books were later translated into English. He relished historiographical debate, and later in his career, he wrote extensively on historiography, taking many of his colleagues to task for their interpretations of the history of Québec. While his book reviews could sometimes be generous in his praise, he also published detailed, lengthy, even intemperate analyses of books with which he disagreed. In the course of his career, Ouellet moved geographically further from Québec. His research focus shifted as well, even if the central questions remained the same. Although he left an unpublished study of the Rebellions of 1837/38, he completed a social and economic analysis of Franco-Ontarians: L’Ontario français dans le Canada français avant 1911. Contribution à l’histoire sociale (2005). Aspects of Ouellet’s career are well covered in Ronald Rudin’s Making History in Twentieth-Century Québec: Historians and their Society (1997) and François-Olivier Dorais’s forthcoming L’ « École » de Québec : une histoire intellectuelle (2022). Ouellet’s death provides a moment to remember the work of the generation of historians who established this journal and popularized the broad, multidisciplinary scope of social history in both francophone and anglophone Canada.
