As part the Cambridge University Press series on Critical Perspectives on Empire, which explores the connections between national and global histories, John Munro's The Anticolonial Front examines the years 1945–1960, when "an intergenerational group of mostly Black radicals who inhabited the overlapping identities of intellectual, cultural worker, and labor activist," emerged in the United States and produced an "original and generative vision that concerned itself with the political economy of imperialism, the international dimensions of capitalism and white supremacy, and 'the pitfalls of national consciousness'" (pp. 3–4). The African American men and women that made up the anticolonial front included Claudia Jones, Esther Cooper Jackson, Langston Hughes, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., George Padmore, Paul Robeson, Richard Wright, C. L. R. James, Alphaeus Hunton, Angelo Herndon, Benjamin Davis, and several more, but Munro pays special attention to the significant contributions made by W. E. B. Du Bois as well as by Jack O'Dell, a "relatively unsung veteran of the Black freedom struggle" (p. 1
