Michael R. Adamson has followed his A Better Way to Build: A History of the Pankow Companies (2013) with another quality review of construction history. He goes beyond the traditional professional side of design and construction history—the architects and engineers—to highlight small business owner Ralph Bramel Lloyd in transforming both the industry as a whole and the urban/metropolitan landscape. In this biography of Lloyd (1875–1953), Adamson never slips into hagiography. He does give kudos to Lloyd's business acumen, especially for the “design-negotiate-build” approach whereby Lloyd retained an architect for design, but allowed a builder to suggest changes and then negotiate on a final contract. But he is also critical of Lloyd. For example, while Lloyd preached laissez-faire capitalism, railing against Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, he never hesitated to take public money or to lease buildings to government agencies. “His self-interest was always obvious,” Adamson states, adding, “it is ironic, then, that federal and state agencies and the public capital that supported their activities in large part sustained Lloyd's commercial real estate business” (pp. 130, 201
