Indigenous Peoples and the Second World War

R. Scott Sheffield (University of Fraser Valley, British Columbia) and Noah Riseman (Australian Catholic University) compare the mentalities, motivations, and experiences of a diverse group of indigenous peoples negotiating the duties, obligations, and opportunities inherent in their relationships with colonial states: the United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia (Native Americans, First Nations peoples, Māori, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, respectively). Part 1 examines the formation of these relationships to the start of World War II. Part 2 explores the multiple dimensions of indigenous peoples' army service and home front experiences during the war. Part 3 considers the impacts of such service on domestic political relations in the four countries. The animating question for the authors is this: Why would indigenous peoples serve their country's armies in the name of freedoms and rights not accorded them at home? Scholars have addressed this important and interesting issue in national studies. This book adds a useful comparative transnational analysis to the scholarship. It aims to “lift each country's experience out of its domestic silo for collective transnational examination, comparison and cross-fertilization” (p. 7).
