This second edition of Neil H. Cogan's massive compendium of the primary sources surrounding the adoption of the Bill of Rights contains new sections on the habeas corpus provision of article 1 and the privileges and immunities clause of article 4 of the original Constitution and new material from legal treatises and legal dictionaries available in the 1780s. The result is an even more useful book that is twice as long as the first edition. Organized by amendment, or clause within an amendment, the book provides materials relevant to understanding the evolution of the text of each amendment, including public discussion of the issue, debates in Congress, and a vast amount of background material. A lawyer or judge looking for a quotation to support a point in a brief or an opinion will find the organizational structure very useful.
