This article analyzes B ritish L abour P arty leaders' discourses on E urope since 2007 – that is, after T ony B lair left power. G ordon B rown and E d M iliband are analyzed in relation to one of the traditional attitudes of the party since the 1950s. It is argued that two trends in attitudes to E uropean integration among Labour leaders can be identified. One is wariness of E uropean integration for fear that B ritain could lose its C ommonwealth links and its global outlook. The other is seeing strong engagement in the E uropean C ommunity as crucial to B ritain's political and economic future. Blair followed these steps, at least rhetorically, in aiming to strengthen B ritish leadership in the EU . B rown and M iliband, though sharing a broad support for the EU , both emphasized the failings of the EU and shared their earlier predecessors' preference for a ‘global’ Britain
