This paper seeks to improve our understanding of the factors which promote or discourage contests in U.S. House primaries. The major hypotheses are that contests will occur more frequently in (1) Democratic primaries; (2) primaries without an incumbent; (3) primaries without an incumbent as party prospects improve; (4) urban primaries; and (5) primaries in redrawn districts. Hypotheses 1 through 3 are confirmed. Hypothesis 4 is disconfirmed. Some support is found for hypothesis 5. Regional and yearly variations are also discussed, as is the interplay of the factors covered by the five major hypotheses. The analyses reported in this paper are based upon an examination of all but a few U.S. House primaries which resulted in the nomination of candidates for the elections from 1956 through 1974
