This article seeks to discuss issues involved in the processes of preserving and assembling contemporary installation art in which the supports and materials come from normal suppliers, that is, they can be purchased and discarded at the end of the exhibition without the need to be preserved as unique and original items. To this end, Rafael França’s Estate and his work Polígonos Regulares [Regular Polygons] are analysed, as well as contemporary reflections that aim to problematize technological obsolescence, assembly and preservation of works of this genre. Furthermore, this article discusses the importance of documents left by the artists as a means of accessing their intentions for the installations, defending an intermediary approach, as pointed out by Joana Philips, as the way in which artists, gallery owners, curators and collections can guarantee the preservation and exhibition of installations
