Entreprenørskapspraksiser i en sørafrikansk teknologi-inkubator

Sammendrag Entreprenørskap blir i stor grad ansett som en mulig løsning på sosiale og personlige problemer i Sør-Afrika. Med utgangspunkt i konseptet «undertrykkende entreprenørskap» viser jeg hvordan entreprenørskap blir promotert som løsningen på samfunnsmessige utfordringer som fattigdom og sosial uro, men som heller resulterer i mistillit, dårlig selvtillit og økonomisk gjeld, på grunn av historiske og strukturelle omstendigheter. Denne artikkelen er basert på materiale samlet inn gjennom et feltarbeid ved entreprenørskapsinkubatoren NextGenSA i utkanten av Johannesburg, Sør-Afrika. Entreprenørskapsinkubatorer tilbyr arbeidspulter, internett og kursing til aspirerende entreprenører og har blitt en utbredt metode for utviklingsprosjekter verden over. Aktivitetene ved denne inkubatoren er i all hovedsak finansiert gjennom økonomisk støtte fra forskjellige private aktører som amerikanske investeringsbanker og teknologiselskaper. Jeg viser at de sammensatte årsakene til at disse kursene kan ha en del negative konsekvenser henger sammen med nyliberale tenkemåter som har blitt utbredt gjennom politiske lovnader og i utdanningssektoren etter apartheid. Videre henger de sammen med hvordan utviklingssektoren har blitt profittsøkende, og på denne måten har gjort seg avhengig av fattige sørafrikanere for å sikre sin egen inntekt
