Les récents développements de l'archéologie protohistorique au Xinjiang permettent de redater les vestiges pré-Han autrefois globalement attribués au Néolithique et de les organiser en « groupes culturels » rattachables au Néolithique, à l'Age du Bronze et à l'Age du Fer (cette dernière période sera traitée en seconde partie*). Après un Paléolithique dont les composants ne sont pas encore connus, les vestiges néolithiques (ou mésolithiques ?) les plus anciens remontent à 9000-8000 ВС et se caractérisent par des assemblages microlithiques non géométriques probablement issus des traditions du Paléolithique final de la Chine du Nord, mais présentant aussi des rapports possibles avec certaines cultures d'Asie centrale. Ces vestiges sont actuellement les seuls qui puissent être attribués au Néolithique, période encore très mal connue au Xinjiang faute de découvertes. Après un long hiatus, plusieurs ensembles culturels (le plus ancien est daté ca. 1800 ВС) sont rattachés à l'Age du Bronze. Témoins de populations qui semblent avoir été en majorité de type europoïde, ils montrent des liens tantôt avec le monde des steppes au sens large, tantôt avec des cultures sédentaires de Chine ou d'Asie centrale
