Although mayors are normally elected for a four‐year term the government also determined that a mayoral election should not be held unless an authority‐wide local election is held simultaneously. For that reason Middlesbrough's mayor, Ray Mallon, and Mansfield's Tony Eggington will not face re‐election until 2007, thereby serving a five‐year term
