Based on the analysis of field and final records of the Shor heroic epic of the 1930s, preserved in the archive of N.P. Dyrenkova (Research Institute of the MAE RAS (Kunstkamera)), the features of the researcher's work on preparing texts for publication are demonstrated. The revealed discrepancies between the originals and the versions prepared by N.P. Dyrenkova characterizes the specifics of the author's assessment of the source texts and her role as the author of publications, including the political context of the time, and more broadly, how ethnographers/ethnologists turn their field records into anthropological texts
