I examine the implications of the Internet for “wholesaler” news agencies. Like most questions about news agencies, mine deal with the business models that underwrite their operations, and the quality of their business-to-business and business-to-customer news and related services. Although the agencies initially perceived the Internet as more threat than opportunity, by the year 2008 they see it more as opportunity than threat. The Internet accentuates the critical importance of content in competition between news providers. Here, the agencies are well positioned in terms of resource and brand identity by comparison with emergent new voices of the web. Enhancement of content requires agencies to acknowledge a market increasingly characterised by “point of view” journalism. While they themselves should not move in this direction directly, they need to provide more analysis and enterprise reporting, within the framework of what I call a “points-of-concern” dialogue with all stakeholders, in an effort towards clearer justification of news selection. I first set these considerations in the context of the early history of news agencies and their respective founders
