Studies of broadcast speech have been neglected in mass media research, particularly where the analysis of radio news messages is concerned. This article provides a framework for examining broadcast messages which improves on the analysis of printed texts, for example, by considering such aspects of discourse as intonation — the way words sound. These analytical tools are applied to two examples of reporting, and help to expose new dimensions of meaning-making in the news
