The paper outlines the nature of the discourse of mass media in Southeast Asia, particularly regarding the formulation of Western media as destabilizing Asian culture and society. The perception of the West other as moral opposite of Asia is problematic. The construction of Western media and the West is shown to articulate Southeast Asia's ambivalence towards the experience of modernity
