This paper will discuss three instances of contemporary Shanghai urban culture: ‘Xin Tiandi’ (‘New Space’, the most famous bars‐and‐restaurants zone in Shanghai), ‘Kodak Super Cinema World’ (owned by Kodak film company), and the newspaper Shanghai Weekly (aimed at a young white‐collar crowd, it mainly talks about leisure spaces such as ‘Xin Tiandi’ and ‘Kodak Super Cinema World’, and consumption activities in Shanghai generally). Through these case studies, I will try to explore the relationship between consumerism and contemporary Shanghai urban culture: how consumerism miraculously combines globalization and localization, successfully taking the place of the dominant ideology, and subsequently enhances the globalized tendency or trend of consumerism to be a new ideology closely related to local life
