This article studies the concept of hoarding during the European Bronze Age. The first section narrates the discovery of a collection of metal artefacts in the River Wear, which could be gifts that were presented to Archbishop Michael Ramsey. The article then presents a definition of the term ‘hoards’ and notes that the study of hoards has helped us to gain more information about the Bronze Age. The next section deals with the three primary problems of interpreting hoards. The article then considers the contexts of deposits of metalwork together with their contents, and explains a new interpretation of the role of the smith. It also studies other aspects of hoards and hoarding, and lists new ways that can help in the study of European Bronze Age hoards
