Kurhany nie są przywiązane do określonej strefy klimatyczno-roślinnej, jednak zdecydowanie najwięcej jest ich w strefi e stepów (lub ich odpowiednika w Ameryce Północnej -prerii) i właśnie kurhanom tej strefy w południowo--wschodniej Europie jest poświęcona niniejsza praca.Należy jednak wyraźnie podkreślić obecność kurhanów, nierzadko mniej eksponowaną, na innych obszarach, np.w strefi e lasów liściastych, zrzucających liście na zimę
