Le Val de Diano porte aujourd’hui encore le nom de la ville de Diano, devenue en 1862 Teggiano. C’est une vallée haute, allongée du sud-est au nord-ouest entre deux chaînes de montagnes, et parcourue de bout en bout par le fleuve Tanagro, affluent du Sele. Il prend sa source dans le massif du Mont Sirino et parcourt ensuite la vallée, longue d’une quarantaine de kilomètres, large depuis Montesano de six km. environ ; puis il s’enfonce après Polla entre les collines qui ferment au nord-ouest le Val de Diano, pour ressurgir près de Pertosa, ayant subi une dénivellation brusque de deux cents mètres environ. Le Val de Diano a été souvent qualifié de vallée interne ou vallée fermée. Au sud, en effet, des vallonnements assez escarpés, vides d’habitants, le séparent de la région de Lagonegro. A l’est, une chaîne de montagnes s’étendant du Mont Sirino à la montagne de Polla constitue une barrière entre le Val de Diano et le Val d’Agri. A l’ouest, le massif des Alburni, dont le sommet est le mont Cervati, le sépare de la côte de Paestum, Velia et Palinuro. Au nord, la vallée, rétrécie après Polla, fait place à une descente rapide sur Pertosa, Auletta et la vallée du Sele
