L'objet manufacturé a souvent besoin de l'écrit. Que ce soit à l'atelier, pour des marques de contrôle destinées aux différents intervenants de la fabrication, au commanditaire ou au client ; au cours de l'utilisation, pour préciser son propriétaire ou son usage ; et quand on s'en sépare, notamment en cas d'offrande votive. Dans chacun de ces cas, l'archéologue peut s'interroger sur l'auteur du message, sa raison d'être et son destinataire. Qui écrit, pourquoi et pour qui ? Cette branche de l'épigraphie, parfois peu empruntée par les spécialistes, constitue pourtant une source de documentation irremplaçable sur des classes sociales n 'ayant pas accès, pour la plupart, aux inscriptions lapidaires : les artisans et leurs clients ordinaires du petit peuple
