The Aztecs] . . . lacked the use of letters, a notable deficiency. They used neither money nor weights. They did not know how to make ships with sails, tackle, rigging, and cordage and know how to sail them .... They lacked iron and the weapons and tools which are made from it; they also lacked wheat and mills with which to grind their maize, the grain they eat. They had no olive oil or wine, although the earth produced both olives and grapes naturally .... They did not know how to make candles from wax and tallow for lighting. They had no beasts of burden for riding or for drawing carts or litters. They sacrificed war prisoners and slaves in such great numbers that in Mexico city alone they are believed to have sacrificed more than twenty thousand persons each year, and they ate their flesh without repugnance. -Juan de Mariana, 15901
