The expression interethnic friction indicates one of the primordial lines of inquiry in Brazilian ethnology. Rather than analytically treating indigenous societies as closed totalities, explicable solely in their own terms, researchers in this area emphasize the need to study the institutions and dynamics of interethnic contact. Roberto Cardoso de Oliveira set out the theoretical bases in the 1960s in dialogue with Marxist sociology, French Africanists, and theories of ethnic identity. The analytic concepts and schemas proposed were applied intensively in Brazil and spread to Mexico and, to a lesser extent, other South American countries. Subsequently, Brazilian researchers pursuing this line of investigation have focused on the importance of conflicts in the configuration of social relations, as well as the intrinsic polyphony and variability of social phenomena. More recently we can observe a significant convergence with the topics, problems, and hypotheses explored by leading authors in contemporary anthropology, especially in the area of postcolonial anthropology
