This book should make grim – but necessary – reading for policy makers, academics, and professionals alike who work on the Congo-Kinshasa region. In this study Michael Nest, François Grignon, and Emizet Kisangani examine the role of economic interests in the tortured peace process in the DRC, concurrently summarizing a seemingly endless catalogue of institutional failures by both national and international organizations. Nest introduces this volume in a powerful fashion by arguing that the economic interests of actors in this series of conflicts have not yet received the sustained scholarly attention they deserve. He then goes on to state that this study ultimately wishes to ‘recharacterize the Congo War’ (p. 13). Far from being a conflict where ‘the state collapsed and greedy rebels took advantage’ (p. 13), Nest argues that the broader historical context of these conflicts should be more openly acknowledged. The roles of the DRC's neighbours, and the historical genealogy of the conflicts, should be more explicitly discussed by both national actors and international donors.
