The marital patterns of economically active females in the United States do not appear to fit the general pattern previously described as characteristic of "the American population." Census data indicate diverse marital patterns for females by occupational and income categories. Moreover, the findings of this study are the reverse of those usually suggested. The findings suggest a strong direct relationship between economic attainment and unmarried status among females in the United States. Attempting to interpret these findings, the author explores the possibility that female marital status can be considered a dependent variable with economic attainment the independent variable. This "rejecting marriage" interpretation is antithetical to the traditional view which takes female marital status as the independent variable, that is, females who are "marital rejects" turn to occupational pursuits
