This paper compares two alternative techniques for the multivariate analysis of three dichotomized variables-the test for the significance of the difference between differences between proportions and the X2 test for second-order interaction. A reinterpretation of the latter test is introduced, thus making available a test for the significance of difference between two Q's. It is also demonstrated that under certain conditions the two tests being compared produce contrasting results and, in the absence of other information, would lead the researcher to opposite conclusions. Some tentative criteria for deciding which of the two techniques is appropriate for a given set of data are suggested
