L'antiquité gréco-romaine, on le sait et on l'a répété à satiété, ne nous a pas laissé de bien nombreux témoignages d'une réflexion spéculative sur la valeur de la monnaie. Sans doute trouvons-nous chez les auteurs grecs, en particulier chez les philosophes comme Platon et Aristote, des considérations sur son origine supposée et sur son utilité. On trouve même, chez Aristote, une théorie assez développée de sa « valeur », où il tente, à sa manière systématique, une distinction entre la monnaie-marchandise et la monnaie-convention
