The Victorian election of 2002 produced the best result for the State Labor Party in the one hundred years of its existence. Never before has Labor won decisive control of both houses of parliament. Never before has a Labor government had such a large swing to it. Nor has any Labor government ever sat on an electoral cushion as comfortable as that upon which the Bracks government now rests. The 2002 election continued a run of dreadful Victorian results (both State and federal) for the Liberal and National Parties, stretching back to 1998.
