This article was among the papers of the late Sir John Gray and has been submitted to us by Mr. A. T. Matson; we are pleased to publish it posthumously. Sir John Gray's notable contribution to historical studies has already been mentioned in the obituary in Azania IV. The paper was written, according to a note on the first page, in 1957. We have omitted some portions which have been superseded by work published since then, and have added a number of editorial notes
