Effective - and not nominal - social entities small or large, national or regional, have cohesion. Cohesion manifests itself by relatively intensive interactions among the components, esp. by communication. This study makes a survey of the relative connectedness or coherence among the European countries by a preference indicator. The indicator eliminates the effect of the frequency due to the difference in the number of main lines in various countries. The results show that the preference doesn't run along the borders of the EC. 1) Benelux, 2) Finoscandinavia, 3) member states of the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy reveal among themselves a strong internal coherence ; while 4) in the Mediterranean region only among the two Iberian countries is this phenomenon noticeable
