The modalities of producing and spreading scientific knowledge have captured the attention of historians, sociologists of science, and philosophers of science. For the past decades historians described the production and circulation of knowledge during early modern and modern times with the help of models and concepts (such as circulation, diffusion, transmission, transfer, dissemination, and appropriation) in order to describe how knowledge and its associated practices and abstract ideas were produced and how they travelled spatially.
