The locational decisions of large corporations, especially those involving research and development (R and D) and its role in technological change, have considerable effects on regional economic development. The locations of R and D facilities of 330 firms in the United States, are found primarily in metropolitan areas. Industry-specific patterns are present, but overall, a small number of major urban areas are the locations of corporate R and D. Changes in these patterns from 1965 to 1977 show that gains in R and D have taken place in only a few northeastern cities and in relatively few (SMSAs) Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas, in the Sunbelt. A second major shift in R and D is outward from some large cities, but within their urban regions. Corporate R and D, although experiencing some locational shifts, is remaining quite concentrated in large metropolitan areas. 47 references, 7 tables
