I N January, 1959, number of this journal, Blaut discussed what he termed the micro-regional sample survey and its application in quantitative study of regional agricultural geography.' He referred to fact that The possibility of using formal statistical sampling in geographic research has recently received a certain amount of attention, and quoted references to work by a number of American geographers. It may, therefore, be of interest to discuss briefly a comparable study which was carried out by present writer.2 The purpose of this study was twofold: (i) detailed examination of farming distributions, with particular reference to farming-type, using individual farm as unit of investigation; (ii) experiment in use of sampling techniques for planning and operating a farm survey, with a view to providing, thereby, data suitable for generalized mapping. Two separate samples were taken; and, on account of diversity of farming conditions and of farming systems within Island's 221 square miles, sampling proportions were, in each case, as large as was practicable.
