L’image de la famille italienne dans la littérature socio-anthropologique anglo-américaine et européenne (1950-1970)

Entre les années 1950 et le début des années 1970, s’élabore une image stéréotypée de la famille italienne – famille repliée sur elle-même, fondée sur le familialisme, la suprématie masculine, la possession jalouse, la revendication de l’honneur, la légitimation de la vengeance – en particulier dans les régions du Sud étudiées par des chercheurs américains et anglais, mais aussi originaires d’autres pays européens. L’article reconstitue le cadre dessiné par ces travaux, au sein desquels se signale la recherche d’Edward C. Banfield à Chiaromonte, en Basilicate, avec la très célèbre notion de familialisme amoral qui a contribué de façon déterminante à faire de la famille méridionale un prototype et un stéréotype ethnique
