Change is intrinsic to all musics. In some cultures the types of change that occur are articulated; in others they are assumed; in a few they may be unrecognized or even denied. Musicologists have studied musical change at various levels of specificity and over various time-spans-from changes in style of an entire tradition over long periods of time to variations in a repeated segment within a single performance. In central Java, an aesthetic for variation in musical performance is articulated by musicians and is observable in musical behavior, but has not yet been investigated systematically. The present study initiates the inquiry by examining one variable segment as it recurs in performances on one instrument, gender barung, by a professional musician, Suhardi, with a greater attention to detail than is normally articulated in the culture .1
