Among the IKung hunter-gatherers of the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa, healing is a central ritual, with significance far beyond effecting a cure. The general structure and function of that ritual have been described (Marshall 1969; Lee 1968; Katz 1982), as have a series of more specialized elements such as the education of healers (Katz 1976, 1981, 1982), male and female approaches to healing (Katz and Biesele 1980; Katz 1982), and the religious context of healing (Marshall 1982). In this paper I want to focus on the experience of healing. Studies of the IKung hold a particular significance. Hunting and gathering or foraging was the mode of adaptation that characterized 99% of human cultural history (Lee and DeVore 1968:3).
